Healing Is Not Linear: What to Do When the Wound Comes Back Around
If healing were a straight road, we'd all be done by now. But healing spirals — and that's not regression. That's depth.

You thought you were done with this.
You did the therapy. You read the books. You prayed the prayers. You cried the tears — all of them, you thought. And then six months, a year, three years later, there it is again. The same wound. The same ache. The same old narrative playing on repeat.
And the voice in your head says: You haven't healed at all.
I want to offer you a different interpretation.
The Spiral Nature of Healing
Healing is not a straight line from wound to wholeness. It is a spiral. You move away from the pain. You gain perspective. You grow. And then the path curves back — not to the same place, but to a deeper layer of the same territory.
When an old wound resurfaces, it is not evidence of failure. It is an invitation to go deeper than you could the first time.
What to Do When It Returns
First — breathe. Resist the urge to immediately fix, suppress, or spiritually bypass what you're feeling. Just let it be present.
Second — get curious. Ask: What is this showing me that I couldn't see before? What am I more ready to receive now?
Third — be gentle. You are not back at square one. You are at a new level of the same sacred work, armed with everything you've learned since the last time.
The Invitation in the Returning
Every time a wound returns, it brings an opportunity: to forgive more deeply, to release more completely, to receive more grace than you allowed yourself before.
You are not going backwards. You are going down — into the roots of yourself — where the real healing lives.
Trust the spiral. Trust the process. And trust yourself.
