We have a distorted picture of what spiritual leadership is supposed to look like.

We imagine it as having all the answers. As projecting certainty. As standing at the front of the room with unwavering authority, every word polished and purposeful.

But the most transformative spiritual leaders I have encountered — and the kind of leader I aspire to be — lead from something far more vulnerable than certainty. They lead from their own becoming.

The Problem with Performance-Based Leadership

When we perform our leadership — when we curate an image of spiritual authority that has no room for struggle or doubt — we create distance between ourselves and those we serve.

People don't need perfect leaders. They need honest ones. Leaders who are willing to say: I don't have this all figured out. I'm still healing. I'm still growing. And I'm going to bring you with me.

The Foundation of Authentic Leadership

Authentic spiritual leadership is built on three pillars: self-awareness, surrender, and service.

Self-awareness means knowing your triggers, your wounds, your patterns — and doing the ongoing work to heal them so they don't leak onto the people you lead.

Surrender means releasing the need to control outcomes and trusting that the divine is working through your imperfection as much as through your gifts.

Service means keeping the people you lead at the center — their growth, their healing, their becoming.

A Word for Emerging Leaders
